Many modern farming games do not focus on the simple parts I enjoy the most but instead focus on telling a story and fighting monsters. My favorite part of the genre is growing tons of crops and raising a modest number of animals. More than a decade later, I feel a bit frustrated by the farming simulation genre. The farming simulation genre had moved on and improved on the formula, so why go backward when I had already played multiple more modern Harvest Moon games? I excitedly purchased it and started playing, and then almost immediately quit. My first opportunity arrived when Harvest Moon released as part of the Virtual Console for Nintendo Wii. I still hoped that someday I would get to try the original game, but I would have to wait until adulthood for my chance. It wasn’t the game I had memorized all the guides for, but it hooked me all the same. I finally had my chance to own a virtual farm when I received Harvest Moon 64 as a gift a few years later. I read the magazine guides repeatedly and had planned out everything I wanted to do, but I never owned Harvest Moon. I was busy trying out my first RPGs and trying to finish The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past before Zelda 64 was due to release still, the game about getting married, owning a cow, and planting corn was the one on my mind. I'd be super happy if they were to make a magical melody type game for 3ds but switched the notes for helpful sprites.I have been fascinated by Harvest Moon ever since reading about it in Nintendo Power magazine, but that fascination surprises me even today. Tool upgrades were also super useful in Harvest Moon DS, allowed me to get a ton done just like the sprites.Īs far as relationships and marriage go I never usually care for it much because it's often so bland, but the characters in these 2 games have some very nice events compared to to others. I loved having a mountain home and a beach home and tons of different places to make pastures and grow crops. Magical Melody also allowed you to buy a ton of land around the town, and have 3 houses. Plus earning sprites was pretty fun 'cause they were a great help around the farm, allowing me to get a lot done. I really enjoy the goals that had to be met to earn notes and sprites. Magical Melody and Harvest Moon DS for sure are my top 2 Never played DS Cute, but I can only assume it's very similar to DS. Forget-Me-Not Valley in Harvest Moon DS, guys. It didn't try too hard to be artistic outside of the character portraits, which I found very expressive and adorable (especially Nami). It was pixellated, and kinda horrible in some respects, but I loved it for its simplicity. And, on top of all that, the art style on DS was kinda old-school. Oh, and all the harvest sprites and the casino - that was great too.įorget-Me-Not Valley is my favourite location out of any game, and the DS version just seemed to improve everything which AWL was missing (too few marriage candidates, a lacklustre "mine", etc.). I looked forward to the festivals, and opening new things: it could be year 5, and I would still be trying to unlock a new hot spring. Things happened, like the mermaid, and the old woman dying. It actually felt like the town was alive a little bit. The gigantic fields and hidden places were great, as well as all the heart events and bachelorettes. I absolutely loved the Witch Princess, and the mine, and all the shops over the phone. I loved playing AWL, but there was just something about the DS version of Forget-Me-Not Valley that I loved.
